As Clinical Director for child and adolescent mental health service at The Maudsley Abu Dhabi, Dr. Clark provides clinical leadership for the full range of clinical services. He is a senior consultant child and adolescent psychiatrist and an expert in Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) and Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD), leading the National and Specialist OCD, BDD, and Related Mental Health Disorders Service at The Maudsley Hospital. Dr. Clark is also an Honorary Research at the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology, and Neuroscience. Dr. Clark was involved in the conception and opening of the Maudsley Health service in Abu Dhabi and has been one of the visiting specialists since the clinic opened.

The National and Specialist Team for OCD and related disorders is the only such specialist team in the United Kingdom. This service has an international reputation for innovation, research, and delivery of the highest quality treatment of OCD and other anxiety disorders. The team sees cases from across the United Kingdom as well as international patients.

Dr. Clark has a broad range of child and adolescent mental health experience. He previously worked in one of the Maudsley Hosptial community based clinics. In addition to his clinical and research experience with OCD and BDD. He has considerable expertise in the assessment and management of Autism Spectrum Disorders, OCD, BDD, ADHD, Depression, Anxiety Disorder, as well as behavioural management issues.

Dr. Clark has considerable experience in the use of medications to support the treatment of mental health issues in children and young people.

Other Roles

Dr. Clark is also the Clinical Director for the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service Clinical Academic Group at the South London and Maudsley Hospital Foundation Trust. This involves providing clinical leadership to nearly 600 staff within the service.

Dr. Clark is an advisor to the UK Department of Health, The National Institute of Health and Clinical Excellence as well as The Royal College of the Psychiatrists.

He is a member of the Special Advisory Group to the national charity OCD action

He is one of twelve UK based senior clinicians who were selected to advise nationally on the development and commissioning of high quality child and adolescent health services.

Dr. Clark has received many invitations to speak on the development and management of high quality clinical services. Along with other members of his team, he has also been part of presenting conferences and training on the treatment of obsessive-compulsive disorder, BDD, and related difficulties.

Dr. Clark worked with the Romanian government to train clinical staff to open 50 special needs clinics across the country. This successful project with international partners has had a significant clinical impact.

Background

Dr. Clark’s first degree was in Pathology at The University of Edinburgh. He then completed training in Medicine at The University of Edinburgh. Dr. Clark then worked for three years in general medicine at The Royal London Hospital. His postgraduate training in psychiatry at The Bethlem and Maudsley Hospitals, the national specialist hospitals for mental health in the United Kingdom. He finished this training within the national and specialist services for children at The Maudsley Hospital.

In addition, Dr. Clark completed a Wellcome Research Fellowship at The Institute of Psychiatry, in the Department of Neuroscience.

Research

Dr. Clark’s previous research interests have included basic molecular and cellular mechanisms underpinning mental health difficulties. He is now involved in research looking at improving access to high-quality evidence-based treatments. This has included research around how to improve access to CAMHS services, including specialist mental health services. The team he leads is one of the most research active clinical services in the field. They have developed innovative new treatment programmes for the treatment of anxiety problems including OCD and BDD. The team is at the forefront of new research developing accessible treatment packages including the use of modern technology to deliver that treatment effectively and without stigma.
