Are you obsessed with your diet? Chances are you might be suffering from an Eating Disorder.
“Rapid urbanization, social media, improved living conditions, fashion industries, advertisements, and a more lenient attitude of parents towards consumption of cariogenic foods”. All these are the foremost reasons for the upsurge in Eating Disorders among children and adults across the world these days. However, the UAE scored poorly in a major global study on healthy eating. The UAE is in the second-from-worst category in terms of deaths annually from a poor diet.
According to the article published in the medical journal, The Lancet, around 11 million deaths each year globally results from an unhealthy diet. Poor diet and not eating healthy foods, including fruits, vegetables, and whole grains kill more people. Eating Disorder is usually a three dimensional obsession with (a) Food, (b) Weight, and (c). Appearance. Eating disorders sometimes may occur due to dysfunctional parenting or physical or sexual abuse, an experience of neglect, childhood obesity, comments on shape and structure and an overall pressure to be slim.
It’s a disorder in which the person significantly misinterprets his/her body and shape, refuses to maintain minimally average weight, and intensely fears gaining weight even though they are underweight.
Some people use food as a way to cope with daily life stressors and to provide comfort for themselves. Bulimia Nervosa is seen in such people. It is an Eating Disorder caused by the repeated episodes of Binge Eating followed by misuse of laxatives, diuretics or other medications; inappropriate compensatory behaviours such as self-induced vomiting; fasting; or excessive exercise.
Avoidant Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID)
A newly recognized Eating Disorder seen in both children and adults. It’s quite different from the above-discussed eating disorders. Individuals with this eating disorder do not experience concerns about weight and shape. ARFID patients are usually unable to meet their nutritional needs due to the worries about the sensory features of food and lack of interest in food.
Is it necessary to treat Eating Disorders?
An Eating Disorder is life-threatening and can have an extremely destructive effect on an individual’s physical and mental health. Recovery from an eating disorder is possible only if you start admitting you have a problem. This step is instead a challenging task for many of us. That’s the reason you need to go for specialized treatments to learn and to start listening to your feelings, listening to your body, start accepting yourself and start loving yourself. If you decide to make a change, seek help from someone who will be supportive and will listen to you without judging or neglecting you.
Eating Disorders range from mild to severe, and they do not improve without help. So it’s good to seek treatment as soon as possible. There are different centers in UAE committed to offering eating disorder treatments.
